Top 5 Tips for Safe Driving in Boston

From About.com

Bostonians have a reputation for being hot-headed drivers. In May 2007, Boston placed third in a survey by Connecticut-based auto club AutoVantage of American cities with the worst road rage (Miami and New York are even worse). The surest ways to set off road rage are to get in an accident, cut someone off, or test people's patience. With that in mind here are five tips for safe driving in Boston.

1. Don't be timid

First time drivers in Boston are often shocked by how aggressive our drivers are. If you are going to drive safely in Boston you will, to a certain extent, have to play by similar rules. Drivers don't leave much room between cars and they expect you to be aggressive enough to insinuate yourself if you need to change lanes or merge. You don't have to drive like a maniac, and you should always try to keep a cool head, but if you are too timid you won't get anywhere and will only serve to anger the people around you.

2. Know where you're going

Always figure out how to get where you're going before you get in the car because trying to change lanes at the last minute can be tricky. There are also one way roads, rotaries, and tunnels to deal with. If you can, study a map and try to have a backup plan for how to get to your destination in case roads are closed or you miss an exit.

3. Keep cash available for tolls

Nothing inspires the wrath of other drivers like not having money at the toll booth. While you're digging for change or filling out paperwork, everyone behind you will be fuming. As a courtesy to others, and to make your own life easier, just keep a few dollars handy at all times.

4. Watch out for pedestrians

It's no joke, Boston pedestrians are either the bravest or stupidest in the country. Pedestrians in Boston will not wait for a light, nor will they feel they need to cross at a designated crosswalk. Be prepared for them to pop out in front of your car at any moment when you are driving downtown.

5. Be aware of the cars around you

Because of the aggressive driving style, people often make very abrupt moves and lane changes. It is likely you won't even see them signal. Boston drivers tend to assume that everyone is prepared for these sorts of death-defying maneuvers. Try to keep an eye on the cars in your general vicinity, leave as much room as possible between your car and others, and allow people to merge when you can.
