Head of the Charles Regatta

From About.com

The Head of the Charles Regatta is the world's largest two-day rowing event. First held on October 16, 1965, the Head of the Charles Regatta is similar to races held in England. In rowing, the term "head" refers to a class of regattas, generally three-miles long, where each boat races against the clock. Winners of each race receive the honorary title of "Head of the River." As this race takes place on the Charles River, the winners of each event earn the title "Head of the Charles"—hence the name of the race!

The 42nd annual race, held Oct. 21 and 22, 2006, had 1,641 boats competing, 8,200 rowers, seven bridges, and three miles of river. See a photo gallery of the 2006 Head of the Charles Regatta.
